font size

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will continue to be on alert to protect the Summer Olympic Games from extremists, even though no incidents have taken place, a NATO official said Wednesday."You never know what can happen but we don't see any particular clearly identified terrorist or other threat on the horizon," said the official, who asked not to be identified.

NATO will continue operations right till the end, he added. The 26-nation alliance is providing round-the-clock aerial surveillance over the Greek capital Athens during the Games between August 13 and 29.

The record 1.5 billion US dollars spent by Greece on Olympic security includes some 70,000 police and security personnel protecting sport venues around the country.

Apart from AWACS radar planes, NATO's assistance also includes fighter jets, Patriot anti-aircraft missile batteries and a fleetof naval vessels to patrol ports and seacoasts.
