China becomes natural rubber technology giant

The Centenary Conference of the China Natural Rubber Undertaking was held in Kunming on September 6. Since 1904 when Dao Anren, ruler of now the Dehong Dai and Jingpo Nationalities Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan, introduced the first Brazilian rubber seedling rubber-growing area in China has grown to 660,000 hectares by 2003. With an annual rubber production of 566,000 tons China ranks the fifth in terms of rubber growing area and production.

Scientists and engineers have established special rubber-growing technologies suitable to the tropical climate in China. The average annual production per hectare in the rubber-growing base in Yunnan has exceeded 1,800 kilograms taking the leading position in the world.
