A survey of Gartner showed that in the second quarter of 2004 servers sales in the Asian-Pacific region (except Japan) reached 1.37 billion USD, up 12.4 percent over the same period of last year and 11 percent over the first quarter.
The Chinese mainland market which posted an annual increase of more than 23 percent and accounted for 35 percent of the market share is leading the servers sale in the Asian-Pacific region. It is followed by South Korea and Australia.
Matthew Boon of Gartner thought that the servers market in the Asian-Pacific area witnessed fierce competition and was very sensitive to prices due to the buyers' market here brought about by the sharp competition between multinational giants and local producers in the market here including China.
He found that players from the financial and manufacturing sectors, as well as small and medium sized enterprises, encouraged by the prospect of economic growth for the second half of 2004, were adding inputs into the servers business.
IBM enjoyed the most market share with 37 percent. HP, with 31 percent, was the second to the blue giant. Boon also noticed Dell's sustainable and efficient efforts in China market had put local peers like Legend and Langchao under considerable pressure.
