China holds that the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) should be resolved through dialogues and consultations instead of exerting pressures and confrontations, a senior Chinese diplomat said on Friday in Vienna.
"China stands for keeping the Korean Peninsula free from nuclear weapons and maintaining its peace and stability," said Zhang Yan, China's permanent representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna.
The remarks were made after the 48th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) adopted without a vote a resolution on the DPRK's nuclear issue, urging the country to "completely dismantle any nuclear weapons program in a prompt, transparent, verifiable and irreversible manner."
Zhang maintained that the DPRK's justifiable concerns for security shall be satisfied in the process of seeking the realization of a nuclear-weapon-free Korean Peninsula.
"This is the most important consensus reached at Six-Party Talks in Beijing, and also the vital aspect of the settlement of the DPRK's nuclear issue," Zhang said.
The Chinese diplomat also called on all parties concerned to maintain endurance and confidence, avoid any remarks or actions that complicate the situation, so as to create suitable conditions for the peaceful settlement of the nuclear issue of the DPRK.
China will continue to work with the international community to seek a nuclear-weapon-free Korean Peninsula and to eventually realize peace, stability and prosperity of the region, Zhang added.
