HK welcomes mainland tourists for Golden Week
font size

In the midst of the week-long National Day holiday, Hong Kong shops have already made preparations for customers flooding into the region. Hong Kong officials said that as many as 400,000 tourists could cross over. Tom Santoro has more.

Tourists in HK could spend as much as 2.4 billion Hong Kong dollars over the week. Some jewelers estimate that since mainland customers will increase this week their sales may increase by 10 percent. They have prepared some special designs for the tourists.

A customer said: "There are many more kinds of goods in Hong Kong than back home, and the prices are relatively lower. Some prices are lower than in Shenzhen."

Some shopkeepers took photos of Olympic champions shopping in their stores. They think the photos of the famous athletes could draw more customers than a sale. And some salesmen speak in putonghua, that is the standard Chinese, to make customers feel at home. Even if they don't speak very well, it also is another good way to attract more customers.
