South Korea and Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) are scheduled to hold discussions this week on the reconnection of two sets of inter-Korean railways and roads, according to South Korean Unification Ministry spokesman onMonday.
During the talks, set for Tuesday through Thursday at the DPRK's border town of Kaesong, working-level officials are expected to discuss details on building the DPRK's southernmost train stationsin eastern and western sections of the sealed inter-Korean border, the spokesman said.
Topics on the agenda may also include the two countries' previous accord to open the two sets of cross-border roads and make test runs on adjacent railways in both sections across the border in this month.
As part of agreements made at the landmark inter-Korean summit in 2000, the two sides have been working to reconnect the railroads.
If completed, one railway will connect the two capitals, Seoul and Pyongyang, and continue to Sinuiju, a DPRK city bordering China. The other line is to run northward along the East Coast on the Korean Peninsula.
South Korea and DPRK started the reconstruction work of the twosets of transportation corridors which stopped service after the Korean War (1950-1953) in September 2002. The two sides completed mines removing work in early 2003 along the two sets of corridors.
