Jiang Zehui, president of Chinese Academy of Forestry, and Joseph Jen, vice minister of United States Department of Agriculture, signed a memorandum of understanding on building Chinese Garden in Washington recently. Chinese ambassador to the US Yang Jiechi, US Department of Agriculture assistant deputy minister Lester Brown and director of US National Arboretum in Washington Thomas Elias attended the signing ceremony.
Chinese Academy of Forestry and the US Department of Agriculture will jointly build a classical Chinese garden in Washington DC, capital of the United States, according to the memorandum.
Both sides unanimously believe that the building of a Chinese Garden in the US capital is the common wishes of people from both countries. Furthermore, the Garden will also serve as a milestone to consolidate the traditional friendship between the two countries and make Americans better understand Chinese Garden culture. Two countries vow to build a first-class Chinese Garden, which will become the bridge and link for the cultural exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.
The planned Chinese Garden is located at US National Arboretum in Washington DC with an area of five hectares and will be in pattern of well-known gardens south of the Yangtze River. Currently, the preparatory work is underway.
