Chen Shui Bian's Oct 10 overture, an out-and-out "Taiwan Independence"
font size

In the peace overture of Oct 10th, in which Chen Shui Bian stated clearly to make Taiwan a "country", denying once again the fact that Taiwan is part of China. This is an out-and-out "Taiwan Independence" activity and is the biggest threat to peace of the Taiwan Straits and security of Asia-pacific region, said Li Zhaoxing, Chinese Foreign Minister on Oct 14 in Beijing.

Li Zhaoxing and Russian Foreign Minister held a joint press conference on talks between state heads of China and Russia in the evening of Oct 14. When asked whether the two leaders discussed Taiwan issue, Li said Taiwan issue is an important issue in connection with China's unification and territorial integrity, and China's interest at the core. "Taiwan Independence" will result in no peace; separation produces no stability. China always persists in basic principle of "peaceful reunification" and "one country, two systems" and eight propositions in developing cross-straits relations and promoting peaceful reunification. China will strive for the peaceful reunification with utmost sincerity and efforts and will never allow anyone to separate Taiwan from the motherland by any means.

Russia has been giving the firmest support to China in the Taiwan issue. Russia has reiterated in the political documents signed by the two heads of state that it opposes "Taiwan Independence" of any form; it does not recognize "two Chinas", or "one China, one Taiwan"; it opposes Taiwan's joining the UN and other international organizations that only open to sovereign countries; it does not sell weapons to Taiwan; does not allow foreign interference in solving the Taiwan issue. China shows appreciation for Russia's stand and thinks it is a concrete embodiment of the Sino-Russian strategic partnership.

President Putin stressed once again in the talks ended in the very evening, Russia will firmly pursue "one China" policy and oppose "Taiwan Independence" of any form; Russia does not support Taiwan in joining the UN and other international organizations that open only to sovereign countries; it will not sell weapons to Taiwan.
