Chinese peacekeeping riot police arrive in Haiti
font size

A 95-member contingent of Chinese riot police arrived in Haiti on Sunday to join the UN peacekeeping mission in the crisis-torn country.

The contingent left Beijing on Sunday morning and arrived in Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince at 02:15 p.m. local time (0815 GMT), Shao Weiming, deputy head of the Chinese police team, told Xinhua in a telephone interview.

The force, whose advanced team of 30 members arrived in Haiti last month, is China's first contribution of riot police to a UN mission.

In Haiti, the 125-member Chinese team, on a six-month mission, will support the international peacekeeping presence, assist and train local police in law enforcement, as well as deal with mass public security emergencies.

So far, China has dispatched a total of 297 peacekeeping police officers to six nations including East Timor, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Liberia, Afghanistan, Kosovo and Haiti.
