Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi says he remains unswayed by China's criticism of his visits to the Yasukuni Shrine, saying the Japanese should choose for themselves how to honour their dead.

During a legislative hearing, Koizumi said as Japanese, he does not think it is bad to visit, pay respect and give thanks to the war dead, reported China Radio International.

The Yasukuni shrine honours the 2.5 million Japanese fallen in modern wars including convicted war criminals such as World War II-era leader general Hideki Tojo.

People in many Asian nations including Japan have voiced outrage over Koizumi's repeated visits to the shrine.

The Chinese government hopes the Japanese side can abide by its commitment and no longer hurt Chinese people's feelings.
