    Four more found dead at Daping coal mine

    Zhao Tiechui (R), deputy director of China's State Administration of Production Safety and head of the Investigation Team for the Daping Coal Mine Gas Blast, visits rescuers at the Daping Coal Mine in central China's Henan Province Oct. 25, 2004. Some 215 rescuers have been deployed for the rescue operation at the coal mine. A gas explosion occurred at the coal mine under Zhengzhou Coal Industry Group on Oct. 20 when 446 miners were working underground. Only 298 managed to escape. The blast has left 86 miners dead and 62 missing.

    China starts its 21st scientific survey of the South Pole

    China's Antarctic expedition ship, "Xue Long" (Snow Dragon), sets out for her 9th voyage to the South Pole from Shanghai, China, Oct. 25, 2004. An exploration team left Shanghai Monday on "Xue Long" to begin China's 21st scientific survey of the South Pole. The 146-member team will spend 150 days in the far south and is scheduled to return to Shanghai at the end of next March.
