EU to monitor China textile imports from 2005
font size

The European Union will set up a special monitoring system for textile imports from China, after it scraps quotas on such imports from all WTO nations on January 1st, 2005.

Officials from the EU said textile-producing nations would face market dominance by China as soon as quotas disappeared.

They also say China is on target to assume a 50 percent share of the world textile market in the absence of quotas, causing potential hardship for some countries like Bangladesh.

The EU now applies 210 quotas on imports of textiles and clothing from 11 WTO countries, including China.
