US arms dealers bet on election campaign
font size

According to the report of "New York Times" of 26 October President Bush now in office has succeeded in pooling in a sum of USD 330 million for his presidential election campaign, an amount of USD 30 million more than USD 299 million for Kerry. The difference of over USD 30 million is basically caused by the US Munitions Group (a general term for the US military organizations, arms dealers and their consortium) by offering more contribution to W.G. Bush.

In this presidential election campaign, the US Munitions Group, for example, Lookheed Martin, Northrop Grumman Corporation and the "New Boomer" the United Technology all are in the forefront of the 50 biggest contributors to the election campaign between the Republican Party and the Democratic Party. And the contribution to the former is much bigger than to the latter.

Why the US Munitions Group is so doted on the Republican Party? It has something direct to do with the difference of the national defence policy between the two parties. The present Republican government lays more emphasis on military strength in its defence policy, advocating that the US maintains the safety and security of the country by superstrong military power. For this, it has for a long time kept on a large military expenditure, increasing its capital input in the research and development of new weapons. As known to everybody the defence policy, military expenditure and the research and development of weapons have everything to do with the economic interest of the US Munitions Group. Therefore, it is certain that during the presidential election campaign the group will provide more money to the Republican Party because the party has always been increasing military expenditure to a great extent.

Since Bush government came to power in 2001, especially after the "9.11" incident it has not only increased its military expenditure to an unprecedented large extent but also launched the war in Iraqi in March 2003. And starting from last July it began to dispose the national guided-missile defence system and also got ready to restart the nuclear tests. The biggest promoter and profiteer in taking these measures are no more than the US Munitions Group. In last August after the "wrestle for money" for the presidential election campaign entered into the crucial period Bush endorsed the "National Defence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2005", making the US military expenditure to reach USD 416 billion in the fiscal year of 2005 (not including the USD 25 billion for postwar reconstruction in Afghan and Iraq), of which that dedicated to the purchase of new weapons account for USD 77 billion, that for research and development of new weapons a big sum of USD 70 billion while that used for guided-missile defence system come to USD 10 billion. Most of these military expenditures will beyond doubt fall into the moneybags of these arms dealers, for they have signed a long time ago with the US Department of National Defence the contract for the research and development or manufacture of new weapons.

Under the great effort of canvassing of the munitions group the US Department of National Defence eventually made the decision on the procurement of 8 items of weapon equipment at a price as high as USD 600 billion. So this means that the US Munitions enterprises will be able to get in a lot of money in the coming 20 years of time. Why the Bush administration set so hard on the launching of the war in Iraq is surely supported by the munitions group at the back.

The "extra-care" and obvious impartiality of the Bush government for the munitions group in diplomatic and national defence policies will be sure to get the repayment from these arms dealers. The more money Bush has collected in for the election campaign is on the one hand a sort of "rewarding prize" from these arms dealers and on the other a sort of prior investment for them to get in more profits. As every big munitions group knows if Bush, who's always styled himself "president of war" gets succeeded in taking up the presidentship the extra-large military expenditure will be carried on in the US and so the anti-terrorist wars. In this way a lot of money will be poured into the bags of the US munitions enterprises while their new weapons will be able to find more "testing grounds" and their unprecedented influence will be exerted continuously on the US government. Of course, for these munitions groups they cannot but play the role of a double dealer. When they contribute a large sum of money to the Republican Party they have also to cast a leer at the Democratic Party in a hope that they won't be bolted outside the door should Kerry be elected president one day.

The marriage of a strong military organization with the munitions industry is a new phenomenon in the course of the American history. Every city, every state council and every office of the federal government can feel its overall influence in economic, political and spiritual aspects, pointed out D. Eisenhower, ex-president of the USA. And now we can come to say that the above assertion by D. Eisenhower has already become a reality long ago, and moreover the munitions group has been exerting bigger and bigger influence on the US internal and external policies.
