Beijing calls upon star hotels to save energy
font size

Beijing has called upon its star-rated hotels again to take power-saving measures as part of the city's efforts to host a green Olympics in 2008.

The Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG) on Monday dished out a batch of power-saving handouts to the 70 hotels in the Chinese capital that have been designated as accommodation suppliers during the 2008 Games, urging them to raise air-conditioned room temperature by one degree during the summer months while lower by one degree in winter.

Study shows that if the temperature of air-conditioned room were set one degree higher in summer, the electricity consumption would be reduced by 10 percent. As a result, Beijing would be ableto save 250 million to 320 million kwh of electricity.

"Saving power is in line with the theme of 'Green Olympics'," said BOCOG vice president Wang Wei.

"We hope that everybody could work together to deliver a green Olympics in 2008," he added.

"Green Olympics", "People's Olympics" and "High-tech Olympics" are the three themes that highlights the Beijing 2008 Games.

The Beijing Municipal Tourism Bureau advised hotels to reduce the use of highly power-consuming facilities such as elevators at peak times of power consumption. The hotels are also encouraged to set the temperature of air-conditioning at above 26 degrees Celsius, enhance room pressurization and reduce the number of opening windows.
