Sharapova beats Williams to win year-end WTA Championship
font size

Russian teenager Maria Sharapova came from one set behind to beat American Serena Williams 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 Monday night to win the WTA Championship in Los Angeles.

The final was a rematch of the Wimbledon final, where Sharapova stunned Williams to claim her first grand slam title in July.

The WTA Championship triumph also meant a perfect season ending for the 17-year-old Russian who won a total of five singles titles.

Sharapova pocketed one million US dollars tying the US Open winner's check -- for the second major title of her career. She also received a new car to donate to her favorite charity.

The Russian prodigy will see her world ranking rise to a career-high fourth when the year-end WTA rankings are released Tuesday.

Williams, who injured her leg during the third set, claimed two titles this season, but none in the Grand Slam events for the first time since 2001.
