Terrorism is enemy of all religions: Indonesian president

Indonesian President Susilo BambangYudhoyono said Monday terrorism is the enemy of all religions and urged the religion faithful to promote religious tolerance in the fight against terrorism.

"In my opinion, terrorism must be perceived as the enemy of all religions," Susilo said in an international conference on interfaith dialogue in the southern Java town of Yogyakarta.

Co-hosted by Indonesia and Australia, the conference was attended by religious figures from countries in Southeast Asia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and East Timor.

"We hope the faithful like you share the commitment to giving enlightenment about the greatest human value of tolerance and loveto others," he told the audience, as quoted by Detikcom online news service.

Over the last three years, Indonesia has been shaken by three major terrorist attacks targeting nightclubs in Bali, a US-run hotel and the Australian embassy compound in Jakarta that left more than 220 people dead.

Terror group Jemaah Islamiyah was widely blamed for the attacks and at least 35 Muslim militants have been convicted.

Also present at the dialogue was Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer.
