Hamas rejects Abbas' call to drop arms
font size

Radical Palestinian group Hamas on Monday rejected Palestine Liberation Organization chief Mahmoud Abbas' call to drop its arms.

Mahmoud al-Zahar, a senior Hamas leader in Gaza, said "we will never drop our guns until the end of occupation and until we will have secure borders for a Palestinian homeland."

But he said Hamas is ready to minimize military actions that would serve the highest interests of the Palestinian people.

Abbas said at a news conference in Jordan earlier on Monday that in order to create an atmosphere for the resumption of peace negotiations with Israel, "we should go for calmness.
