3rd Int'l Congress of Chinese Mathematicians closes in HK

The third International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM) closed in Hong Kong Wednesday.

Over 700 prominent mathematicians from around the world, including Yau Shing-tung from Harvard University, John Coates fromCambridge University and Zhang Shouwu from Columbia University gathered in Hong Kong to discuss the latest developments in mathematics research.

Participants said the congress has widened their horizons in the discipline which would definitely be helpful to their researchin the future.

They agreed that the congress has greatly fostered unity of Chinese mathematicians who are doing studies and research abroad.

The Morningside Center of Mathematics in China arranged a delegation of some 20 representatives to attend the congress, including seven outstanding young Chinese mathematicians who were commended with the Morningside Award.

The six-day congress was organized by the Chinese University ofHong Kong and the Morningside Center of Mathematics in China.

The next congress will be held at Hangzhou in 2007.
