Portuguese midfielder Luis Figo confirmed Thursday his irreversible retirement from the national soccer team and assured that in this moment he is only interested in his present club, Real Madrid.
"I keep my decision not to return to the national team, I think the team is moving on the right path," said Figo to the press at the end of the meeting with the Portuguese President, Jorge Sampaio, in Lisbon.
"What I think in this moment is to do my work in Real Madrid, but you never know, things do not depend solely on me, although this is my goal," said the player with respect to his future in the Spanish club.
The coach of Portuguese national team, Brazilian Luiz Scolari, said days ago he trusted he could count with Figo for the Germany 2006 heat.
Figo who has been a member of the national team for 15 years, announced last August his retirement from the national team.
He won the award as the best European team of 2000 and was awarded as the Player of the Year in 2001 by FIFA. He participated in the Korea-Japan 2002 World Cup, and in the Euro cups of 1996, 2000 and 2004, losing the final in the latest edition against Greece.
