The African Union (AU) has donated 100,000 US dollars in support of the people hit by tsunamis in south-east Asia and part of the Indian Ocean coast, said an AU press release in Addis Ababa on Dehere on Friday.

According to the release, Alpha Oumar Konare, chairperson of the AU Commission expressed Africa's solidarity and sympathy to the affected people and governments, and sent condolences to the bereaved families.

He commended the efforts already deployed by some states, including African states, to alleviate the suffering of the affected population.

He called on the entire international community and member states of the AU in particular, to join the efforts and to provide necessary assistance to the affected countries.

The death toll from last weekend's earthquake tsunami catastrophe rose to more than 120,000. Indonesia, with around 80,000 dead, was the worst hit, followed by Sri Lanka, India and Thailand.
