Construction of new venues to start this year: Beijing mayorNew stadiums will be the main task of Olympic venue construction next year, said Beijing mayor Wang Qishan in his report on economic work at the ninth plenary session of the Ninth Communist Party of China (CPC) Beijing Municipal Committee on December 29, 2004. Wang said that Beijing will kick off in appropriate time renovating and expanding existent venues, speed up carrying out the construction plan, quicken the construction of the roads and facilities around the Olympic venues and kick off landscape projects such as Olympic central square, waters and greenery patches. Wang cautioned that in the short three-odd years before Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, people should fully understand the arduousness and complexity of the preparations for the Olympic Games and have a thorough estimation of the various difficulties and problems and further strengthen the sense of urgency and responsibility. Wang said, frugality and quality must be both ensured in the construction of Olympic venues, which should serve the Olympic events as well as comprehensive utility after the games. He suggested the constructors rely on their development, reform and opening-up and on the other hand draw the experience and lessons from foreign countries. Wang stressed that the constructors should bear in mind their responsibility to the people and to the history and build quality Olympic venues, which can stand the test of history.
