Chinese medical squad brings laughter and comfort to tsunami-stricken aeras
font size

"China, I love you!" With a burst of laughter, a couple of little girls who surrounded the female Chinese doctors uttered these words in Chinese they had just learnt at the Lampaya refugee camp, Banda Aceh, Indonesia in the afternoon of Jan 4th.

The joyous atmosphere at Lampaya would make you doubt whether you were in a wrong place. Was this really a refugee camp? Apart from people's smile, everything there, from shabby tents to a large number of wounded would give a definite answer: this was a refugee camp.

The people here had suffered great pain eight days before actually. In the Blang Padong town, home to 6, 000 residents, there were only 1,500 left after the disaster. All houses were flattened. The survivors had to put up temporary shabby shelters inside the palm and banana woods under great sorrow.

The tsunami had caused double injuries to local residents: they were injured and they lost their families. The Chinese medical team came all the way here at the time the tsunami-stricken people needed medical aids most. In two days' work, the medical members had treated 550 wounded people. "The disaster is very serious, and we need lots of doctors. The Chinese doctors have given us so much help. My shoulder has been aching after it was hit by a piece of wood. But now I feel relieved at last," the 24-year-old young man Harsa told journalist.

At the same time they gave treatment to local residents, the medical staffs publicized knowledge of disease prevention and carried out epidemic prevention by handing out disinfector, tablets and napkins to them. The four female members of the Chinese medical squad had touched children here with their smiles and hence become the most popular ones. At intervals in treatments, the female medical staffs took time to teach the children some Chinese. Many of them are now able to speak "China, Beijing, I love you" in the Chinese language.

The Chinese doctors' outstanding performance in two days has touched the local residents. Every time they approach the doctors, they will shout "China" and give them a thumb up. When the car carrying the medical staffs arrives at a village, many residents have already been there, waiting. "I love China and the Chinese doctors very very much. They are so nice!" Astri Yulia, 21, said. An old man picked fruits from trees in his yard and sincerely sent them to the Chinese medical members. The 52-year-old Burhanuddin, a highly respected figure in the town, said to the Chinese doctors, "You are great. China, great!" And more residents chose to express their gratefulness by giving sincere smiles to angels in white from afar.
