Indonesian will continue the efforts to enhance economic cooperation with China which now becomes one of Indonesia's largest trade partners, a senior official has said.
"China is the fourth largest export destination for Indonesia's non-oil products and third largest supplier for our imports," Minister of Trade Mari Elka Pangestu was quoted Friday by Bisnis Indonesia newspaper as saying.
She noted that, according to the Indonesian government's figure, trade volume between the two countries rose 26.94 percent to 5.4 billion US dollars in the first eight months of 2004 compared to the same period a year earlier.
In 2003, bilateral trade volume rose 26.89 percent to 6.8 billion dollars from the figure in the previous year with the balance favoring Indonesia, Mari said during the opening of the Indonesia-China Cooperative Investment (ICCI) Thursday in Jakarta.
The minister expressed the government's full support for the establishment of the ICCI, saying that the institution is expected to play an active role in encouraging Chinese investors to take part in Indonesia's infrastructure development.
On the occasion, ICCI chairman Kusma Lingga Widjaja said 10 Chinese big companies have expressed willingness to materialize investments in various sectors, including manufacture, power plant,oil, gas, telecommunication and roads here.
