India tests short-range surface-to-air missile

India on Wednesday test-fired a short-range surface-to-air missile, the Press Trust of India news agency said.

The Trishul (Trident) missile was successfully tested from a mobile launcher at 12:53 p.m. (0723 GMT) in Chandipur, 200 km northeast of Bhubaneshwar, capital of eastern Orissa state, PTI said.

With a range of 9.6 kilometers, the solid fuel-propelled missile is capable of targeting aircraft and sea-skimming missiles. It can carry a warhead of up to 15 kg.

India has established a missile arsenal including the short-range ballistic missile Prithvi, the medium-range Agni and Akash missiles, the anti-tank Nag missile and the supersonic Brahmos missile.
