US-Japan Joint Statement on Taiwan might trigger off crisis
font size

In view of the US-Japan joint statement on the Taiwan Issue experts in Beijing aired their views one after another by saying that they oppose the US-Japan's making the Taiwan issue as their common strategic goal because it is concerned with China's national sovereignty, territorial integrity and national safety and security, and they advocate that China, the US and Japan, the three countries will strengthen their strategic communications by making clear their strategic intentions in order to establish safety and security based on mutual confidence.

This is the first time that the US and Japan play the card of the Taiwan issue, pointed out Wang Jianmin from the Taiwan Office of the Chinese Academy of Social Science. It is likely to send a wrong signal to the forces for "Taiwan Independence". He said, the US-Japan joint statement has given the forces for "Taiwan Independence" a shot in the arm, making them more rampant to push forward their ways for "Taiwan Independence". This may lead to a dangerous explosion of the Taiwan crisis and this also goes against the constant stand the US has always advocated on the Taiwan issue.

Japan is attempting to put a curb on China with the Taiwan issue in order to get better benefits for its own. This is a misjudgment on the situation and will be of no good for the peace and stability of Asia-Pacific Region, making the improvement for the Sino-Japanese Relations to face with more variables.

It doesn't mean a "sudden change" for Japan's stand on the Taiwan issue, said Hu Jiping, deputy head from the Research Office on Japanese Affairs of the Institute for Researches on Modern International Relations of China. Actually Japan has for a long time showed its intention to play bigger a "card on the Taiwan issue" before the US-Japan joint statement on the Taiwan Straits is brought out in the open.

The statement jointly issued by the US and Japan this time indicates that Japan has jumped out to the "forefront" from "behind the scene" on the Taiwan issue, becoming opener, more active on the issue and has made a breakthrough of the vague stand as expressed before, pointed out Prof. Liu Jianfei from the International Strategy Research Center of the Party's Institute of the CPC. It has brought out to the open its strategic intention in which Japan wants to place a curb on China with the Taiwan issue.

Experts put forward a popular point of view that China, the US and Japan should set up a mechanism for strategic communications, expand their exchanges and cooperation in all fields and especially in the military field. Only by strengthening the communications of the three countries in between China, the US and Japan, elucidating clearly their respective strategic intention and policy attitude, said Wang Jianmin, can the peace and security along the Taiwan Straits and of the Asia-Pacific Region be better kept and maintained.

Hu Jiping said, China must strengthen its strategic dialogue with the US and Japan, making the US and Japan to understand fully and correctly China's stand of not committing to giving up the use of armed forces on the Taiwan issue, and making them to have a reasonable understanding of China's development, thereby eradicating the strategic distrust.

Yuan Peng, deputy head from the Research Office on the US Affairs of the Institute for Researches on Modern International Relations of China, pointed out that the communication between China and the US should step over the functional dialogue and the two parties must strengthen their strategic consultations, exchange views frankly and get to know each other's intentions, thereby reducing the strategic misjudgment.

He also pointed out, the two sides across the Taiwan Straits should take the charter flights during the Spring Festival as a point of departure for the dtente of the situation across the Taiwan Straits, increase the communications and mutual confidence and reduce the possible occurrence of crisis. Only by doing so, can the pretext taken up by the US and Japan for intervening the Taiwan issue be radically wiped out.
