Chinese human rights groups strongly oppose US-Japan joint statement on Taiwan

Chinese human rights organizations express strong opposition to the listing of the Taiwan question, which concerns China's national sovereignty, human rights, territorial integrity and national security, into US-Japan joint statement.

Lin Bocheng, Vice-president and Secretary General of China's Human Rights Development Foundation, told the press on Monday evening.

The US-Japan joint statement involving the issue of Taiwan severely interferes with China's national sovereignty and breaches the human rights of the Chinese people, Lin pointed out. Respect of a nation's sovereignty is a basic principle of the International Law while national sovereignty is the basis and basic guarantee of human rights. If a country loses its sovereignty there will be no human rights to speak of. Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory, and the Taiwan question is the internal affairs of China. By listing the Taiwan question into its joint security statement, the US-Japan Security Consultative Committee openly challenged Chinese sovereignty and infringed upon the human rights of the Chinese people, an act the Chinese people will never permit.

The Japan-US joint statement involving Taiwan also is seriously in violation of the UN Charter, international human rights conventions and international law principles, therefore it is sure to be opposed and condemned by the Chinese people and also by the other peace-loving countries and peoples in the world who uphold justice, said Lin.

When establishing diplomatic relations with China, the United States and Japan signed respectively with China joint communique and joint statement over Taiwan, in which the United States acknowledged that "Taiwan is a part of China" and Japan pledged "full understanding and respect of the Chinese government's stand that Taiwan is an inseparable part of the People's Republic of China." The two governments have reiterated their stands on many public occasions since then. But this time they severely interfered with China's national sovereignty, territorial integrity and reunification by issuing a joint statement which goes beyond Japan-US bilateral concerns, regardless of their commitments made in front of the international community. "Their act running against popularity will therefore be doomed to failure."
