Webber to win first Grand Prix this year: Stoddart
font size

The Minardi team owner Paul Stoddart said Mark Webber will win his first Grand Prix this year.

It was Stoddart who opened the door to Formula One for Webber, the new Williams-BMW driver.

Stoddart signed Webber to a drive with Minardi for 2002 before the Australian moved to the struggling Jaguar team.

"I think Mark is on the brink of showing the world what he can really do," said Stoddart.

"In a competitive car like the Williams I think Mark will win his debut race this year if Williams get it together and I really hope they do," he said.

"Then, he's going to be up there challenging for what I believeis the true championship position - and that's second place (behind Ferrari)," he said.

Webber is the only one in Formula One that has the dedication to match multiple world champion Michael Schumacher, according to Stoddart.

"I think Mark brings to any team he comes to - he certainly did to our team and he did to Jaguar - such a tremendous team spirit," Stoddart said.

Webber put the Jaguar in second place in Malaysia and he also did some fantastic things with that car that were well beyond what the car was capable of, Stoddart said.

"If you have that kind of absolute dedication...and there's only one driver other than Michael Schumacher out there that lives, breathes, sleeps, eats Formula One 110 per cent - and that's Mark Webber," said he.

"That's why I've got so much faith in where he'll end up and I think you'll find he'll surprise everybody with Williams," Stoddart said.
