Washington is weighing how best to support the European negotiations to persuade Iran to curtail its nuclear programs. This could be a major strategic shift for the US government, which has accused Iran of seeking to make nuclear weapons.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the talks are heading in the "right direction". She said the negotiations will show whether Iran is prepared to end Washington's suspicions.
The White House is now considering giving its support to Europe in offering incentives to Tehran to persuade it to give up its nuclear ambitions.
US officials' say under the new strategy, the US would not block Iran as it seeks to join the World Trade Organization. Washington would also not stand in the way of European allies if they want to sell Tehran parts for civilian aircraft.
