Chinese FM: EU arms embargo "obsolete, useless, harmful"
font size

The European Union's arms embargo on China is "obsolete, useless and harmful", Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing said here Sunday at a press conference during the annual session of the country's top legislature.

The embargo does not comply with the all-round strategic cooperative partnership between China and the European Union, he said.

China adheres to the road of peace and development and does not need to buy a lot of advanced weaponry from the EU, he said.

"China is also a developing country, " added he. As a matter of fact, we do not have the money to buy so expensive and useless weapons."

Li Zhaoxing said what China opposes is political discrimination.

Li made the remarks in reply to a German journalist, who said whether the anti-secession law to be submitted to the National People's Congress for approval would affect to some extent the EU arms embargo.

"It is an unfounded worry," Li said.

The law conforms to the peace and stability in the Asian-Pacific region and even the world at large, so it will definitely receive more and more understanding and support in the international community, he acknowledged.

Li said the law is aimed to prevent the "Taiwan independence" secessionist forces from taking reckless efforts and embodies the mainland's utmost sincerity on peaceful reunification and protection of China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

"It is in the interests of the Chinese people and nation," the foreign minister said.
