font size

Tokyo marked the 60th anniversary Thursday of the US air attack on the capital during World War II, holding ceremonies and events with the theme of "seeking peace."

Designating March 10 as "Day of Peace," the Tokyo metropolitan government held a memorial ceremony in Toshima Ward with about 2,000 people participating.

"Wars are terrifying," survivor Kisaburo Nakane told the participants. "We must increasingly deepen our mutual understanding with people around the world in order to realize lasting peace."

To hold up Japan's fascist invasion to Asian countries, on March 10, 1945, the United States carried out air attacks on parts of the capital, According to Tokyo's air-raids center, more than 100,000 people were killed in the attack.

Japan surrendered on Aug. 15 that year.
