China's top advisor Jia Qinglin Thursday called on lawmakers of the National People's Congress (NPC), the top Chinese legislature, to ensure the success of a legislation aimed at preventing Taiwan's secession from China.

"I hope you will earnestly deliberate on the draft anti-secession law ...and ensure the successful completion of this legislation," said Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top advisory body, while joining in a panel discussion of the Taiwan delegation to the ongoing annual full session of the NPC, which will vote on the draft law next Monday.

Jia, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC), urged the lawmakers to "publicize the purport of the enactment of this law in a comprehensive and accurate manner" and "grasp the correct direction for guiding the public opinion".

Talking about the four-point guidelines set forth by Chinese President Hu Jintao on the development of cross-Straits relations under new circumstances, Jia said that the guidelines had "refutedthe fallacies of 'Taiwan independence' secessionist forces" and had underlined the necessity to "promote the development of cross-Straits relations in a pragmatic manner while resolutely opposing 'Taiwan independence'".

"The guidelines are of great significance to the success of our work on Taiwan," said Jia. "We must conscientiously study and grasp them, and implement them in our practical work in a down-to-earth manner."

He expressed the hope that the lawmakers would continue to actively promote the resumption of cross-Straits dialogues and talks on the basis of the one-China principle, and "work hard to do more good and concrete things for the Taiwan compatriots".

Also on Thursday, Huang Ju, Li Changchun and Luo Gan, all members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, participated in panel discussions of lawmakers from northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality and central China's Henan Province, respectively.

Huang, also vice premier of the State Council, the Chinese cabinet, exchanged views with the NPC deputies from Ningxia on issues like the further improvement of the legislative and supervisory work of the people's congresses, the strengthening of ideological and moral education in the society and the building of a harmonious society in China.

Li, who is in charge of the Party's cultural and ideological work, stressed the role of an "advanced socialist culture" in the building of a harmonious society while talking with the Chongqing lawmakers.

Discussing with the Henan delegation, Luo, also secretary of the Committee of Political Science and Law under the CPC Central Committee which oversees the police and judicial work, voiced his opinions on how to effectively maintain social stability and further improve the socialist legal system.
