People's Daily, China's leading newspaper, runs commentary Wednesday, hailing the newly-enacted Anti-Secession Law as "promoting peaceful reunification of China and protecting the Taiwan compatriots."
The article says that since the law was "virtually unanimously ratified" at the third session of the 10th National People's Congress (NPC) Monday, it must "conform to the common aspiration and firm will of Chinese at home and abroad," the article said.
The law highlights the "Chinese government's consistent stand to work for peaceful reunification with utmost sincerity and efforts."
"It is a law that promotes peaceful reunification, protects the fundamental interests of the Taiwan compatriots and opposes and cracks down on separatist forces seeking Taiwan independence."
"It is very necessary and timely to formulate the Anti-Secession Law as separatist activities have been escalating recently," according to the article.
The Taiwan authorities have attempted to declare Taiwan independent through referendum, which has seriously undermined China's sovereignty and territorial integrity and threatens peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits and the Asia-Pacific region as a whole.
The Anti-Secession Law is not against Taiwan people, but designed to check separatist forces in Taiwan. It works for peaceful reunification instead of being a war mobilization law, the article said.
It shows that the Chinese government will never change its "one China" principle and will continue to fight against Taiwan separatist forces, which, the article said, will be understood by all Chinese people, including 23 million Taiwan compatriots.
