A suicide car bombing in the western Iraqi city of Ramadi late Thursday, killing 11 Iraqi police commandos and wounding 14 others, the US military confirmed on Friday.

Among the wounded were two US soldiers, nine police commandos and three civilians, said a US military spokesman.

Earlier, Dubai-based al-Arabiyah TV channel reported that 6 Iraqi police commandos were killed and some 19 others wounded in the car bomb attack at a checkpoint in Ramadi.

Reports reaching here said that the attack took place on Thursday night, when a suicide bomber drove an explosive-laden vehicle into a checkpoint on the eastern outskirts of Ramadi. Thebomber also died.

Ramadi, some 110 km west of Baghdad, is one of the most dangerous spots in Iraq. The elite Iraqi commando unit was sent tothe region recently by the Interior Ministry to quell the violence.

US and Iraqi forces had surrounded parts of Ramadi, setting upseveral checkpoints in and around the city, as violence and sporadic clashes break out frequently between the US soldiers and insurgents.
