Tens of thousands of bullets were stolen from Israeli military ammunition store rooms in Messua and Yafit in the Jordan Valley, the Jerusalem Post reported Monday.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman said tens of thousands of rounds for light weapons as well as a large number of flares were discovered missing from the storerooms on Sunday.
Sources in the Shin Bet, the Israel security agency, said it is still premature to say whether Jewish extremists or terrorists are behind the break-in robbery.
The ammunition in the storerooms is used by community emergency response teams, said an IDF officer. "They are padlocked and fenced in."
The officer also said that a routine inspection found ammunition was missing in the Messua bunker and an immediate order was then sent out to check all the other storerooms in the area and it was discovered that ammunition at the Yafit bunker was also stolen.
The incident comes at a time of mounting tensions as security officers fear that Jewish extremist groups may intensify their actions and possibly resort to the use of weapons to oppose the planned withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and northern West Bank starting in July.
Meanwhile, Israeli security officers are also concerned over the situation in the Palestinian territories, accusing Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas of failing to reign in militants and lawbreakers and restore calm to the Palestinians-controlled lands.
