China to focus on economic construction, peaceful development: Hu

Chinese President Hu Jintao said in Bandar Seri Begawan Thursday that China will always concentrate on its economic construction while firmly pursue the peaceful development.

Hu made the remarks when he met with Chinese Embassy staff members, employees from Chinese corporations and Chinese students here.

The president said peace and stability are very important issue,adding that without a stable society, nothing can be done. It is important for China to have a peace and order environment while reforms are underway, Hu said.

Hu said that top priorities will be given to maintain social stability and protect the fundamental interests of the people.

On the world affairs, the president said China will always carry out the foreign policy of peaceful coexistence, mutual benefit, peaceful development and independence, so as to create a good regional and international atmosphere.

He said during his visit, he can feel the deep friendship between China and Brunei. The Chinese president asked the Chinese here to make joint efforts to further strengthen friendly relations between the two countries.

The Chinese president left for Jakarta Thursday afternoon after a two-day visit to Brunei, the second leg of his three-nation Southeast Asia tour, which will also take him to the Philippines.

In Indonesia, Hu will attend an Asian-African summit scheduled for Friday and Saturday in the Indonesian capital, and join leaders from Asian and African countries in the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Asian-African Conference in Bandung Sunday. Then, he will pay a state visit to the Southeast Asian country.
