Spain opens trial of 24 Al-Qaida suspects for terrorism
font size

Twenty-four suspected Al-Qaida members went on trial here Friday, with three of them accused of helping to plot the Sept. 11 terror attacks on the United States.

Spain is the second country, after Germany, to try suspects in the suicide airliner attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001.

The main suspect is Imad Yarkas, alias 'Abu Dahdah', who is alleged to have overseen a cell that provided logistical cover forSept. 11 plotters.

The other two suspects are Driss Chebli and Ghassub Al Abrash Ghaylun.

Chebli allegedly organized a meeting in July 2001 at Tarragona on the Mediterranean coast of Spain, during which the details of the Sept. 11 terror attacks were finalized.

For his part, Ghaylun filmed the World Trade Center towers during a visit to the United States and allegedly gave the tapes to an Al-Qaeda operative.

The other 21 on trial are charged with terrorism offenses but are not directly linked to the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
