Rainstorm kills 2 in Guangdong

A rainstorm accompanied by heavy winds and lightning struck Guangzhou, capital city of the south China's Guangdong province Monday, killing two people and injuring one other, according to a local official.

The heavy rainstorm, with average rainfall reaching 94.5 mm in the city, flooded more than 40 villages, damaging crops on 2,666 hectares of farmland and destroying 1,397 houses, and causing economic losses of 41.1 million yuan (4.95 million US dollars), the official said.

Lightning struck the same day at Lingshan Town of Panyu District, killing one person and injuring another, said the source, who also said the collapse of a wall in Baiyun District of the city during the rainstorm crushed a middle school student to death.

The flooding has receded and victims have been properly treated, the source added.
