German president vows to give no chance to neo-Nazis
font size

German President Horst Koehler vowed Sunday to let human sufferings caused by war and holocaust never happen again and give no chance to neo-Nazis.

"We have the responsibility to keep awake the memory for all this suffering and its causes and we must ensure it never happens again. There is no final stroke," Koehler told a special assembly of both houses of parliament, marking the end of World War II in Europe.

"We will not forget the 12 years of Nazi dictatorship and the mishap Germans have brought to the world," he said.

Koehler noted that Germany today is a different country compared with 60 years ago, not only from outside but also from inside. "Germany today is, the first time in its history, surrounded with friends and partners. Between us is war impossible, " he said.

On the resurgence of neo-Nazis in Germany, Koehler said there are some people who want to go back to racism and right extremism, "but they have no chance."

During Koehler's address, some 3,300 neo-Nazis staged a rally around eastern Berlin's main square Alexanderplatz.

Meanwhile, thousands of leftists also gathered nearby to counter the neo-Nazi's planned march.

Some 6,000 riot police are bracing for possible confrontations between leftists and neo-Nazis.
