font size

Belgium held a grand ceremony at the monument of the Unknown Soldier in Brussels on Sunday to commemorate the end of the Second World War in Europe.

Belgium's King Albert II presented a wrath to the monument and signed the remembrance register at the beginning of the commemoration service to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Nazi Germany's defeat.

Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt and congress leaders attended the commemoration ceremony.

Around 2000 people including senior officials, over 300 WWII veterans and over 300 students attended the commemoration service.

During the ceremony, an unidentified WWII veteran passed on a torch to a student, implying that the war should be remembered one generation after another.
