Torrential rains leaves 4 dead, 4 missing in Taiwan
font size

Four people have died and four others remained unaccounted for since torrential rains hit various parts of Taiwan province on May 12, according to media reports reaching here Sunday.

Torrential rains in the past few days have caused heavy human casualties and agricultural losses around the island.

Two of the deceased were residents in the northern county of Miaoli. The third deceased was a 60-year-old man residing in Hsinchu City in northern Taiwan and the fourth one was a 64-year-old man in Taitung county in eastern Taiwan.

Three of the missing people were employees of a company in Nantou County's Jenai village. The company's employees were on a mountain-climbing excursion when torrential rains caused landslides in the county's mountainous regions.

Six other employees were injured. The county's fire department has sent 43 rescuers to search for the missing trio.

A construction worker in Hsinchu County's Hengshan village was washed away by rash floodwater while he was working under a bridge Thursday. Rescuers continued their search for the 33-year-old worker identified as Huang Jen-chi.

Heavy rainfall also caused considerable damage to highways, bridges and farms around the island, reports said.
