FM spokesman: China "delighted" to see Andizhan turmoil under control
font size

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said Tuesday that China is "delighted" to see that the situation in Uzbekistan's Andizhan has been under control and supports the country's efforts to maintain domestic and regional security and stability.

Kong made the remark in response to the Uzbek government's statement last Friday that the situation in the eastern town of Andizhan was under control after thousands of armed protesters set free prisoners and clashed with security forces.

"China is delighted to see the situation is under control and the social order and people's life are returning to normal," said Kong, adding China has kept a close eye on Uzbekistan, China's close neighbor and partner, for the past several days.

Kong also said China strongly opposes terrorism, splittism and extremism in any form, and supports the efforts made by Uzbekistan and other countries in this region in safeguarding domestic and regional security and stability.
