China Tuesday denied a report saying that the country is arranging a visit by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to Pyongyang and voiced objections to "five- party talks" that will exclude the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

A Japanese newspaper, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, reported Tuesday that the DPRK asked China to arrange a visit by Rice to Pyongyang in a bid to reach a breakthrough on nuclear and missile issues.

"This report has a lot of imagination, but no truth at all," China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan told a regular press conference.

Kong also expressed opposition to the proposal of so-called " five-party talks," saying that he doesn't think it's a good idea, because "facts have proven that six-party talks are a realistic and effective way to peacefully resolve the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula."

Recently both the DPRK and the United States made some positive signals, and China hopes the two sides can show more goodwill and release more positive signals to create favorable conditions for restarting talks, he said.

"We hope the DPRK and the United States can make contact to enhance mutual trust and understanding," he said.

"We'll welcome and encourage such contact, no matter when and where it takes place."
