US immigrations officials in Florida have arrested Luis Posada Carriles, a Cuban exile accused of bombing a Cuban airliner nearly 30 years ago. Posada was the target of "March Against Terrorism" in Havana, led by President Fidel Castro.
Castro led a protest march of an estimated 1.2 million people past the US diplomatic mission in Havana to demand that the Bush administration arrest Posada, who's seeking political asylum in the US.
Posada is a former CIA collaborator and longtime anti-communist activist. US authorities face the dilemma of how to reconcile sympathy for politically influential Cuban exiles with Washington's firm stance against terrorism suspects after the September 11 attacks. This has fueled Castro's accusations of hypocrisy.
Venezuela has requested the extradition of Posada in connection with the 1976 airliner bombing that killed 73 people.
Posada has denied any involvement in the bombing.
