Ousted Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, now in exile in Japan, is applying for a renewal of his identification as a Peruvian national, local radio reported Wednesday.
Fujimori, who governed Peru from 1990 to 2000 and stepped down amidst corruption charges, went to the Peruvian Consulate in Tokyo and submitted paperwork to renew his National Identity Document, the radio said.
The radio said Fujimori wants to return to Peru and contend in the coming presidential elections.
Fujimori is wanted by Lima for charges including human rights violations and embezzlement. He went to exile under the protection of his double citizenship in November 2000.
