font size

A senior official from the State Administration for Industry and Commerce said China is reviewing and revising an anti-monopoly law.

The Legislative Affairs Office of the State Council, China's cabinet, is leading related legislation work, helped by the State Administration for Industry and Commerce and Ministry of Commerce,Li Dongsheng, deputy director of the administration, told a recent symposium on the Anti-Monopoly Law.

Li's remarks were confirmed by Shang Ming, a department director of the Ministry of Commerce, who said the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), the country's top legislature, has listed the Anti-Monopoly Law as part of its legislation plan for this year.

The law, which has been in draft mode since 1994, is "greatly significant" towards curbing monopolies, promoting fair play in the market and safeguarding the interests of consumers, analysts said.

Figures show China has now a combined 89,000-strong staff working in the anti-monopoly sector.
