US believes Zarqawi is wounded
font size

Top US general Richard Myers, the outgoing chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, said on Sunday that the United States "tends to believe" a web site claim that al Qaeda's leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, has been wounded.

"What we've seen is postings on their web site that, in fact, he's been injured," Myers said in an interview with Fox News Sunday.

"Because we follow these web sites, we tend to believe that that's probably true," he said.

However, the general said he did not know whether Zarqawi had left Iraq for treatment in another country, as some militant sites and news organizations have reported.

An Internet statement posted in the name of his Islamic militant group said Tuesday that America's most wanted man in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, had been injured.

Zarqawi, a Jordanian militant, has been leading insurgency in Iraq. He has claimed responsibility for scores of suicide bombings, ambushes and other violence in the country.
