China has 680,000 administrative villages in total

China currently has a total number of 680,000 administrative villages, 900 million farmers and 5 million village heads including Party secretaries and village committee directors, Yu Zhan, vice director of the Chinese Association for Promoting Township and Village Development, said on May 29 in Shanghai.

Administrative village is the smallest self-governance organization unit in Chinese countryside. Since the reform and opening up more than two decades ago, China's rural areas have seen rapid development, with the gap between villages increasingly widening, Yu said. A large batch of villages get rich through bold innovation, some relying on new industries, some on markets, some on science, technology and some others on culture.
