The foreign ministers of Italy and Spain said Friday that the ratification process of the European Union's constitutional treaty should not be affected by the French and Dutch "no" vote on it.
The rejection of the EU constitution in France and the Netherlands should draw great concern about the bloc, and some effective measures should be taken to overcome the current crisis, said Italian Foreign Minister Gianfranco Fini and his Spanish counterpart, Miguel Angel Moratinos.
Talking to reporters after their meeting in Rome, the two foreign ministers stressed that all EU member states should continue their efforts on pushing forward the ratification process of the constitution.
Fini said the upcoming EU summit on June 16-17 would be an opportunity for serious analysis on the constitutional crisis and seek effective political measures.
Italy and Spain would work together for consensus among the 25 EU members, Fini added.
Fini also challenged Italian Labor Minister Roberto Maroni's remarks of abandoning the euro currency in Italy, saying Maroni's opinion was ridiculous and did not represent the stand of the Italian government.
Both Italy and Spain have ratified the EU constitution.
