Armed forces propose truce in Bolivia
font size

The armed forces of Bolivia proposed Thursday to demonstrators and authorities a truce for a peaceful solution to the political and social crisis in the country.

The head of the armed forces of Bolivia, Luis Alberto Aranda warned about the possibility of clashes between Bolivians but ruled out that the crisis will lead to a civil war.

According to dispatches from La Paz, the administrative capital of Bolivia, Congress has plans to analyse Thursday the resignation of President Carlos Mesa and the succession of the president.

Aranda told the press that during the persistent mobilizations and roadblocks, the armed forces will be respectful of human rights in order to avoid clashes among Bolivians.

He demanded a social and political truce allowing the succession of Congress and a peaceful solution to the crisis in the country.

The head of the armed forces abstained from pronouncing for or against the leaders of Congress taking the country's Presidency, as considered in the Constitution.

The armed forces will abide by the congressional decision about the presidential succession, he said.
