While Taliban-led militancy is on rise in the post-Taliban Afghanistan, the US-led coalition troops are seeking Afghans cooperation to stem insurgency.
"Military operations alone cannot prevent these acts of violence. It must be a cooperative effort from the Afghan people, religious leaders, Afghan National Army and Police to prevent violence and terrorist activities," US military spokesman James Yonts told newsmen on Monday.
His comment came amid increasing attacks on Afghan troops, US soldiers and government officials.
Militants in their latest attack killed five American soldiers in southern Kandahar province Monday morning. While an explosion at a mosque in the same province a week ago left 19 dead, including Kabul police chief, and wounded 52 others.
Kandahar, the former stronghold of Taliban movement and its surrounding areas have been the scene of increasing wave of violence since early spring in which over 150 people including militants, Afghan and US troops as well as civilians were killed.
The spokesman, however, expressed US army's commitment in supporting Afghan government to overcome difficulties.
"Coalition forces are committed to assisting the Afghan government in establishing the conditions for lasting peace and prosperity in Afghanistan," he added.
